The caustic recovery plant designed and developed by CentPro is predominantly a multi-effect evaporation plant. In the process of caustic recovery, the lye (caustic soda) is re-concentrated by subjecting it to heat in a heat exchanger. Further, when the lye reaches the evaporator, a significant amount of vapor is released as a result of water evaporation that eventually increases concentration.

How it works?​

In a caustic recovery system, the caustic which is at low concentration is heated up to its boiling point from a heat-generating source. The vapor that is created due to the aforementioned process is then used to heat the liquor. The hot liquid is flashed at low pressure and the vapor that it creates is used again.

Applications

Knit Mercerizing​

In the case of Knit Mercerizing, there are very few impurities that are present such as starch. Hence, due to the low presence of impurities, the caustic that has been recycled is pure as well. In addition, the caustic that has been recycled can be used for a longer duration prior to when the impurities reach a certain level.

Grey Mercerizing

In the case of Grey Mercerizing, it contains a lot of size in the liquor that is weak and thus the recycled caustic needs to be replaced frequently. In addition, it is hard to identify the source of the sizing material. To ensure that the caustic that has been recovered is usable, the viscous and lower GPL caustic has to be treated. In addition, the recovered caustic is dossed with fresh caustic in order to maintain its GPL.

Mercerising Process

To increase the tenacity of cotton fibre textile industries, adopt a process called mercerization cycle. The operation is carried out by using Sodium hydroxide which is also known by caustic soda. Cotton fiber or yarn rinsed with a solution of caustic lye which has concentration about 22 – 27%. Both the mature and immature cotton fiber will soak the lye. After the soaking process, there is a drastic change in the internal structure of the fiber. At the end of a mercerizing cycle, the fabric treated with water to reduce the excess caustic lye from the surface of the fiber. As, because of water wash the concentration of caustic lye goes on decreasing. This solution is termed is weak lye as it has concentration up to 6 -7%.

Most Industries discharge effluent from mercerizing process to ETP where a large amount of acid is utilized to make ETP effluent neutralized because of alkalinity nature of weak lye. Thus, it implies towards substantial loss of caustic soda.

Caustic Recovery Technique

The caustic recovery operation came into picture which mostly focused on reducing acid consumption by recovering caustic from weak lye solution.

How it works?

A multiple effect evaporator system is used to recover caustic soda from effluent. In this unit operation effluent is passed through a series of multiple effect evaporator whereby application of steam; water gets vaporized and the remaining solute is of caustic which strong lye.
